“Did Jesus ever ask, ‘Who am I?’” Written by Lesallan – December 20, 2023
In the Bible, there is a story about Jesus asking His followers who they thought He was. Some people thought He was a prophet, while others thought He was someone else. However, one of His followers, Peter, said Jesus was the Messiah. This question was very important because it helped Jesus understand how people saw Him.
This story is found in two of the four books in the Bible called the Gospels – Matthew and Luke. It tells us about a time when Jesus was with His followers in a place called Caesarea Philippi, where many people worshiped gods that were not the God of the Bible. Jesus asked His followers what people were saying about Him. They told Him that some people thought He was John the Baptist, who had been killed by a king named Herod. Others thought He was Elijah, who was taken up to heaven in a fiery chariot. And still, others thought He was Jeremiah or one of the prophets who had spoken God’s word to Israel.
After spending some time with Jesus, his disciples had to decide whether they believed he was the Son of God or just an ordinary man. Jesus asked them directly, “Who do you say I am?” This was an important moment for the disciples, as they had seen Jesus perform miracles and had listened to his teachings. They had to choose to accept Jesus as the Messiah or reject him as a false prophet.
Peter was a member of a group who believed in Jesus. Once, when Jesus asked his disciples who they thought he was, Peter spoke up and said that Jesus was the Messiah. This was a big deal because it meant that Peter believed that Jesus was more than just a teacher or leader – he believed that Jesus was the promised Savior that God had sent to save people. Peter recognized that Jesus was the Christ, the person that had been prophesied in the Old Testament.
Jesus praised Peter for his wise answer and acknowledged that it came from God the Father. He then declared that He would build His church on the foundation of this belief, and nothing could destroy it. Jesus also gave Peter and the other disciples the authority to make decisions that would have an impact both on earth and in heaven. He instructed them not to reveal that He was the Messiah since He had to suffer and die before He could enter into His glory.
Jesus Christ is a historical figure who has enormously impacted the world. One of the most important questions we can ask ourselves is who Jesus is to us personally. Is he simply a wise teacher or a religious leader, or is he more? For many of us, the answer is that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, who came to save the world from sin and death. This belief has profound implications for how we live our lives and what we hope for in the future. So, it’s important to take the time to consider this question and decide for ourselves who Jesus is to us.
Many Blessings on this Fifth Day Before Christmas of 2023,
