Devotional: Embracing Our Complex Journeys

Moses’ life is a captivating tapestry intricately woven with threads of complexity and divine purpose. Born to Hebrew parents during oppression and strife, he was destined for greatness. In a courageous act of love, his mother set him adrift in a basket on the mighty Nile, ultimately leading to his rescue and adoption by Pharaoh’s daughter. Thus, Moses was raised in the luxury of an Egyptian palace, yet his Hebrew lineage instilled a profound sense of empathy and justice. This duality of identity profoundly influenced his journey and ultimately shaped history.

In Exodus 2:11-15 (New International Version, 2011), we are presented with a pivotal moment in the life of Moses. When observing an Egyptian man mistreating a fellow Hebrew, one of his people, Moses, took decisive action. The text emphasizes that Moses meticulously surveyed his surroundings to ensure that no one was watching before he took the life of the Egyptian, subsequently concealing his body in the sand. This deliberate and premeditated act suggests a profound commitment to justice and an unwavering determination to defend his people against oppression. This pivotal moment sheds light on Moses’ enthusiastic sense of justice and loyalty to his people and foreshadows his future role as a leader and deliverer of the Israelites.

When Moses attempts to resolve a dispute between two Hebrews the following day, he is met with the repercussions of his previous actions. The man’s question, “Who made you ruler and judge over us? Are you thinking of killing me as you killed the Egyptian?” indicates that Moses’ earlier behavior was no secret, causing him to experience feelings of fear and betrayal. His well-intentioned efforts to protect his people result in rejection and a sense of impending danger, compelling him to seek refuge in Midian.

The passage indicates that Moses’ act of murder was deliberate, as it describes how Moses made sure that no one was watching before acting. This careful consideration suggests that his decision to kill the Egyptian was intentional and planned.

As Moses fled to Midian, he experienced many emotions: betrayal by his people, confusion about his identity, fear for his life, and the burden of failure. Moses faced significant inner turmoil when he was caught between two worlds that did not fully accept him.

Understanding the intricacies of Moses’ birth and upbringing is essential for fully grasping the events in Exodus 3. Moses’ background provides insight into the profound internal conflict he experienced and the significance of his divine calling.
