What Does the Future Hold for Any of Us?
Written by Les Allan – November 25, 2023
This is a question that many people ask, especially in times of uncertainty and crisis. Some may look to astrology, fortune-telling, or other prediction sources, but as Christians, we have a more reliable and trustworthy guide: the Bible.
The Bible reveals God’s plan for the future of individuals and the world. It shows us that God is in control of history, has a purpose for everything that happens, and will fulfill His promises to His people. The Bible also gives us hope, comfort, and direction as we face the challenges and opportunities of life.
One of the most essential Biblical references about the future is Jeremiah 29:11 (KJV), where God says to His exiled people: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” This verse shows us that God has a personal and loving interest in our lives, that He wants what is best for us, and that He has a good future in store for us. Even when we go through trials and difficulties, we can trust that God is working all things together for our good (Romans 8:28).
Another key biblical reference about the future is Philippians 1:6, where Paul writes to the believers in Philippi: “being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” This verse assures us that God is not finished with us yet, that He is still transforming us into the image of His Son, and that He will complete His work in us when Jesus returns. Until then, we can rely on His grace and power to help us grow in faith, love, and holiness.
A third biblical reference about the future is Revelation 21:1-4, where John describes his vision of the new heaven and the new earth: “Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth,” for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” This verse reveals the ultimate future that God has prepared for those who love Him: a new creation where He will dwell with us forever, where there will be no more sin, sorrow, or suffering, and where we will enjoy His presence and glory for all eternity.
These are just some of the many biblical references that speak about the future. As we read and study them, we can better understand God’s plan, a deeper trust in His providence, and a stronger hope in His promises. We can also learn how to live in light of the future by seeking His kingdom and His righteousness first (Matthew 6:33), by setting our minds on things above (Colossians 3:2), by being ready for His coming (Matthew 24:44), and by sharing the gospel with others (Matthew 28:19-20).
What does the future hold for any of us? The answer is found in God’s Word. The future holds God’s love, grace, and glory for those who belong to Him.
In Christ and as a Child of God,
