🐑 Wolves in Wool: Discerning Truth in a World of Deception
“Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.” — Matthew 7:15 (KJV)
In the heart of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus issues a warning that still resonates today: not all who speak in God’s name are sent by God. Some come cloaked in humility, kindness, and religious language—but their true motives devour rather than nourish.
🔍 The Disguise of the False Prophet
Sheep’s clothing represents innocence, gentleness, and a sense of belonging. It speaks of someone who appears to be part of the flock, maybe even a shepherd guiding it. But appearances can be deceiving. Jesus peels back the facade and shows us what lies beneath: a ravenous wolf—hungry for control, attention, and self-glorification. The danger isn’t always in what is said, but in what is subtly twisted.
False prophets often:
- Speak partial truths with persuasive eloquence.
- Appeal to emotion over Scripture
- Exploit trust for personal gain.
- Avoid accountability and humility.
🧠 Discernment is Not Distrust
Jesus does not call us to be suspicious of everyone, but rather to be wise and discerning. This calls for:
- Anchoring ourselves in the Word of God
- Testing the fruit of someone’s life and message (Matthew 7:16)
- Seeking the guidance of the Holy Spirit
- Listening for consistency between words and actions
Paul later echoes this in 2 Corinthians 11:14 when he says, “Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.” Not every shining voice is divine.
🌱 What Good Fruit Looks Like
If wolves devour, true shepherds cultivate. The fruit of a faithful prophet, teacher, or leader is seen in:
- Humility and servant-heartedness
- Doctrinal integrity
- Love expressed in action.
- Willingness to be corrected and to submit to God’s authority.
Just as wolves leave carnage, true shepherds leave healing, hope, and growth.
💬 A Word for Today
In an age of spiritual influencers, online ministries, and media-saturated messages, the words of Christ cut through the noise: “Beware.” Not fearfully, but faithfully. Watch closely. Stay rooted. Let love be discerning and bold.
Ask yourself:
- Does this message align with the whole counsel of Scripture?
- Does this teacher magnify Christ or themselves?
- Is the fruit nourishing, or is it leaving me spiritually weakened?
🙏 A Closing Reflection
Lord, help us to walk in wisdom. May we be neither cynical nor naive but grounded in truth and love. Teach us to recognize Your voice amid the noise and to follow those who reflect Your heart. Amen.
Blessings,
Lesallan
