Finding the Truth

Finding the Truth

Truth feels like a distant star—visible in the night sky yet just out of reach. We long to grasp it, hold it, and build our lives on its firm foundation. But what does “truth” actually mean? How do we recognize it when everything around us seems to shift with the wind? In this reflection, we’ll explore the nature of truth, the obstacles that cloud our vision, and the paths by which we can approach truth in both mind and heart.

Truth can be understood on at least two levels:

1. Objective Truth

   1. Facts that remain constant regardless of opinion

   2. Mathematical and scientific discoveries that hold under scrutiny

2. Subjective Truth

   1. Personal experiences and inner convictions

   2. Emotional insights and spiritual “knowing.”

These two dimensions often intersect. A scientific fact can shape how we see our world, while our inner convictions guide how we interpret those facts. Recognizing the interplay between mind and heart helps us avoid the trap of thinking truth can be pinned down by logic alone.

Obstacles to Truth

Our pursuit of truth is hindered by forces both external and internal.

Confirmation Bias

We gravitate toward information that reinforces what we already believe, ignoring evidence to the contrary.

Emotional Barriers

Fear, shame, and guilt can blind us. A truth that threatens our pride or security might be brushed aside.

Cultural Narratives

Every society carries stories—political, religious, social—that shape collective assumptions. We may accept these narratives uncritically.

 Information Overload

In an era of endless headlines, sifting through what’s credible and what’s noise is exhausting.

Acknowledging these obstacles is the first step toward dismantling them.

Pathways to Truth

How do we navigate through noise and illusion? These practices light the way:

1. Critical Reflection

Pause and ask why you believe what you believe.

2. Community Dialogue

Honest conversation with trusted friends can reveal blind spots.

3. Spiritual Disciplines

Prayer, meditation, and scriptural study tune our hearts to divine wisdom.

4. Intellectual Humility

Admit what you don’t know. Let go of the need to have every answer.

5. Continual Learning

Engage with new perspectives—books, lectures, conversations outside your comfort zone.

Truth in Scripture

From the beginning, the Bible stakes a truth claim:

“And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:32)

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” (Psalm 119:105)

Scripture invites us to anchor our search for truth not in shifting winds but in a character—God’s unwavering nature. As we immerse ourselves in biblical narrative, the contours of truth become clearer, guiding our steps and shaping our convictions.

A Comparison: Objective vs. Spiritual Truth

| Aspect               | Objective Truth                       | Spiritual Truth                          |

|———————-|—————————————|——————————————|

| Source               | Empirical observation, logic          | Scripture, prayer, inner witness         |

| Verification         | Reproducible experiment or data       | Consistency with divine character        |

| Changeability        | May evolve with new discoveries       | Unchanging when rooted in God’s nature   |

| Impact on the Soul   | Intellectual confidence               | Peace, transformation, moral vitality    |

Personal Application

The truth is not an academic exercise. It transforms how we live:

– Relationships become more authentic when built on honesty.

– Decisions carry weight when anchored in clear convictions.

– Inner freedom emerges as we shed lies we’ve told ourselves.

Here is a simple exercise to practice:

1. Identify one belief you hold without question.

2. Trace its origin, family, culture, and personal experience.

3. Test it against Scripture and trusted community input.

4. Journal what shifts for you in the process.

The quest for truth is lifelong. It winds through libraries of science, the depths of our own hearts, and the pages of Scripture. Along the way, we’ll confront biases, wrestle with uncertainty, and sometimes feel dizzy from the immensity of what we don’t know. Yet with each step toward honesty—intellectual, moral, and spiritual—we draw closer to the source of all light.

Let this be your invitation today: pause, reflect, and lean into the pursuit of truth with humility and courage. The journey may be demanding, but the freedom it brings is worth every step.

Blessings,

Lesallan
